Food Really Does Matter

More and more of us are realizing that food matters. Unfortunately much of the food offered at our supermarkets don't matter. Food grown and processed the conventional way has lost much of it's nutrition and has been contaminated with many chemical additives. Have you ever tried to read through a list of ingredients posted on all the conventional food products? Wow, I can't even pronounce most of words describing the chemical additives. It's frightening to realize that we are putting that stuff in our bodies. But the FDA seems to think the stuff is OK.

My research on food, diet and nutrition has led me to become a "green guy". Keeping me green is eating natural and organic foods. By eating green for me, this also helps the greening of our environment, since growing our food supply organically helps keep our environment healthy and green too.

I am going to research these chemical additives and share the insights I find her on my blog.

Whole Grains Are Good and Good For You

Whole grains are so important in our diet, that I have been researching what is included in this category of food. A good list of whole grains will include:
• Amaranth
• Barley
• Buckwheat
• Corn, including whole cornmeal and popcorn
• Millet
• Oats, including oatmeal
• Quinoa
• Rice, both brown rice and colored rice
• Rye
• Sorghum (also called milo)
• Teff
• Triticale
• Wheat, including varieties such as bulgur, cracked wheat and wheatberries
• Wild rice

Good whole grain wheat bread is an excellent source of nutrition and the best company I have found to deliver consistently natural, fresh breads is the Great Harvest Bread Company which has been baking whole grain bread products for more than 30 years. They purchase their premium whole wheat from family-owned farms located on the high plains of Montana. This region is known for growing some of the highest quality wheat in the world. Farmers send their harvest samples to suppliers for preliminary testing, and if these samples meet specified criteria they are then shipped to Great Harvest's research & development bakery in Dillon, Montana.

Check them out, and take a look at my sourdough bread Web site. Great Harvest bakes a whole grain sourdough bread also, and sourdough has special nutrients in it, that when combined with whole grains, makes it a super food.

Exercise For Energy

Everyone talks about the importance of exercise for energy and health. And, of course it's true. But do we really have to buy all the equipment being advertised everywhere we look, or sign up for an espensive fitness center program?

I don't think all that stuff is necessary. I have exercised most of my life, and I have a simple routine that I follow, and it works for me. Kept me healthy, athletic and slender all my life. Here is what I do:

1. Brisk, 15 minute walk, 4 or 5 times a week, or as often as I can with my busy lifestyle.

2. Stress, tension exercises for my chest and stomach areas, and which I do while on my computer, and at stop lights or stop and go traffic jams while driving. They are simple and quick, and I don't have to change clothes. Here is what I do:

* For the chest: press the palms of your hands together very hard and hold for a count of 12. Do as frequently as time permits.
**For the stomach: exhale your breath out completely. Suck in your gut as tight as possible and hold for a count of 12. Do as frequently as possible.

3. Simple floor exercises:

* Pushups - 25 - 4 or 5 times a week
**Stomach crunches - lie on your back, draw up knees and cross , with hands clasped behind your neck, raise up and touch elbow to opposite knee, 25 times, and then repeat with other elbow and knee. Do about 4 or 5 times a week.

4. Deep Knee bends and toe raises - about 4 or 5 times a week, I do 60 toe raises and 25 deep knee bends.

I also use one piece of equipment, a one wheel roller that I grasp with my hands, and while on my knees I roll out in front as far as possible, and repeat about 25 times, 4 or 5 times a week.

This is what works for me. Try it, let me know if it works for you, or what you do for exercise.

Want More Energy? Not For Your Home, But For You!

Do you need energy? Don't we all. If we don't have energy it is difficult to have a happy, getting things done day, and enjoy the many relationships we engage in. I write reports about health & nutrition, based on my research and my own healthy lifestyle. So let's look at how to acquire enough energy for a healthy, happy lifestyle.

There are tons of articles out their about energy, but they seem so full of things we really don't want to hear, and because it sounds sooooo complicated. So let's keep it simple, easy and to the point. There are 4 rules of thumb that will give us the energy we need:

1. Sleep. Yes, everybody knows we have to sleep 8 hours a night, and none of it while we are at work. I try for 6-8 hour a night. If I only get 4 or 5 hours once in a while, my energy is't affected that much. It's getting only 4 hours of sleep night after night that will lower your engery.

2. Eat a good breakfast. Who has time for that? Keep it simple. A glass of orange juice, hot cup of green tea, whole grain cereal, and sourdough bread toast. I know you love coffee like I do, but it is so abundant everywhere that I wait and have it latter, again and again. There is much more to say about breakfast, and you can find more at my healthy breakfast food, Squidoo Lens site: http://www.squidoo.com/dquentinhealth/

3. Drink 10 eight oz glasses of water a day. Ohhhh, I don't like drinking that much water. But, since about 60% of our body weight is water, we need to keep replinishing it. I don't drink that much water, but I do drink liquids, and they count. Orange juice, coffee, green tea, fruits, and any juice. Limit soda pop, even though a liquid, because of the sugar highs and subsequent lows (energy loss).

4. Eat foods with soluble fiber in them, for snacks and lunch, like beans, oats, barley, whole grain rice, apples, strawberries, oranges and carrots. Soluble fiber aids in keeping blood sugar levels steady, avoiding highs and lows.

I have much more in my health and nutrition reports:
